Lent is a season of forty days, not counting Sunday which begins on

Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday. Lent comes from the

Anglo‐Saxon word lencten, which means “spring.” The season is a

preparation for celebrating Easter. Historically, Lent began as a period

of fasting and preparation for baptism by converts and then became

a time for penance by all Christians. Lent is a time when many

Christians observe a period of fasting, repentance, moderation and

spiritual discipline.

The First Sunday describes Jesus’ temptation by Satan; and the Sixth

Sunday (Passion/Palm Sunday), Christ’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem

and his subsequent passion and death. Because Sundays are always

little Easters, the penitential spirit of Lent [is] tempered with

joyful expectation of the Resurrection.

The Bible does not mention Ash Wednesday or the custom of Lent,

however, the practice of repentance and mourning in ashes is found

in 2 Samuel 13:19; Esther 4:1; Job 2:8; Daniel 9:3; and Matthew

Suggested Reading for Lent

February 18 – March 25   Join us during the season of Lent for a weekly study on the restoration work that God does in our lives. This is a time of reflection, penitence, and preparation for the Easter Life we are called to begin in the world. Often we feel overwhelmed by the “mess” in our lives, and it seems God could never redeem it. During this study and season, allow God to restore you and the mess.
